Gourmet Flavored Coffee: Spiced Coffee Recipe
By Sirena Van Schaik
If you have read any of my articles about coffee, you have probably guessed that I am a coffee fan. I am one of those people that doesn’t run out to the store and pick up a can of Folgers “to wake me up in the morning.” Instead, I have to buy the gourmet coffee beans that need to be ground for my morning coffee. Generally, I like less flavored coffees, especially in the morning, but my husband loves it when I bring home flavors such as butter pecan, or hazelnut.
In my house, we have moved past the whole store bought coffee and although it would probably save a few dollars here and there, it is an expense that is totally worth it.
So why am I going on and on about the beauty of gourmet coffee. Probably just to illustrate how great this recipe is since it doesn’t call for gourmet coffee beans but instead uses instant coffee –suppresses that shudder.
Actually, this recipe is great and it is fairly easy to make. On top of it, you or your children could decorate jars and mix up this spiced coffee mixture to give as Christmas gifts. People will love it and so will you.
What you need:
- Decorative Container: You only need this if you are giving this out as gifts; just make sure the containers are airtight. If you are keeping the coffee for yourself, simply store it in the container the instant coffee came from or in a Ziploc bag.
- 1½ cup of instant coffee
- 1 tsp of ground allspice
- 1 cup of sugar: you can play around with this; add less sugar if you don’t like a lot of sweetener. Never add more, however.
- 1 tsp of ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp of ground cinnamon
Directions:
- Clean all the containers that you are using to store the coffee in. Make sure that they are completely dry before you add the spiced coffee since water will ruin it.
- In a large bowl, combine the coffee and sugar. Mix until everything is well-blended.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice.
- Pour into the sugar and coffee mixture and stir together until everything is well blended.
- Store in your decorative container and give as a gift.
To make an excellent cup of spiced coffee, all you need to do is bring a cup of water to a boil. Once the water is hot, pour it into the coffee cup and add 2 tsp of spiced coffee granules to the water. You may need to add a bit more depending on the size of your mug and your personal preference for the taste but do so gradually. After that, add cream if you desire or drink as is.
